Santoshi (shown reading a poem on International Women’s Day) like many mothers in Hands in Outreach’s  literacy program for women in Nepal, was denied an education as a child, making her vulnerable to the inherent inequities of her culture and surrounding environment. Just when she was finding her voice via HIO’s Be a Part of Her Dream (BPOHD) while pursuing her high school diploma, she was killed by her abusive husband the week following this Women’s Day celebration. Santoshi’s cruel death is a stark reminder of rising gender-based violence during the pandemic. Gendercide Awareness Project grieves with Hands in Outreach over this tragic loss and continues our work together to keep mothers safe and thriving: Transforming Lives Through Education
