Hands in Outreach is pleased to announce Mamata Rai as its new Executive Director, pictured here as a young girl seated next to her mother. Mamata was chosen to be sponsored by HIO when she was 7 years old. Her mother, Ram Kumari was a weaver in a small Tibetan carpet factory; they lived in a tiny, rented room the size of a closet. She understood as a young girl she would someday be required to provide for her family. After graduation from high school, HIO helped her obtain her first job that eventually led to a degree in Social Work, financed from her own salary. She volunteered on the HIO-Nepal board for 10 years and in 2022 was hired as full-time Director of Social Services in HIO’s Kathmanduoffice. Upon the retirement of her mentor, Ram Adhikari, she was the logical choice for leading HIO programs into the future. Gendercide Awareness Project is proud to recognize the life–affirming work of HIO and Mamata’s desire to use her gift of education to help change the lives of girls and women now under her vigilant care.
