Queen Mothers’ Association from Odumase, Ghana through the Unitarian Universalist United Nations Office
The Queen Mothers are part of a royal line in the Krobo district of Ghana. To participate in the Association, the women must not only have royal lineage but also distinguish themselves by giving back to their community. Nevertheless, they are very, very poor. Their village has just one water tap and virtually no electricity. In former times they practiced subsistence farming, but the village had to relocate to when a dam was built to create Lake Volta. The new arid site is too dry to farm, and the villagers have become desperately poor.
