This article highlights all that's wrong for women in Afghanistan.
The director of the women's shelter protecting the girl (operated by Women for Afghan Women) received death threats from the girl's family, from other mullahs, and from pro-government militia-men; she now seeks to flee the country. The head of the local Women's Affairs office resigned and relocated after receiving similar threats. Her crime? She insisted that the mullah be prosecuted.
In 2007 the United Nations Population Fund estimated that each year about 5000 women are killed worldwide in honor killings. Afghanistan's contribution will certainly increase due to the US withdrawal, and women's rights will be rolled back. Indeed, the latter process has already begun.
