Gendercide has consequences that are perverse and unexpected. Consider the following article about a campaign propagated by China's Women's Federation. Ostensibly created to "protect women's interests and rights," the Women's Federation has been co-opted to serve another purpose -- that of persuading women to abandon higher education in favor of marriage and childbearing.
Communist Party officials in China are nervous about the country's skewed sex ratios and the fact that in a short period of time, at least 30 million young men will be unable to find mates. This is a ticking time bomb. Large numbers of rootless and dissatisfied young men can only lead to social unrest. The solution is to tell Chinese girls that they will wind up as old maids and spinsters if they do not marry quickly.
Party officials are also nervous about the quality of China's work force, in particular it's intelligence and ability to compete in the 21st century. Smart women must therefore marry quickly and bear smart children in order to improve the quality of the the work force.
This is yet another instance that upends a common misconception -- that if women are in high demand, their status will improve. In fact, just the opposite occurs.
